StreetWave Media presents an exclusive interview with hip hop artist, Jay $orento located in Montgomery, Alabama.
1. What made you decide to jump into the music industry or music business?
I always wrote and recorded music and booked the studio section. I also wrote a lot of poems and came up with hooks and melodies for others as well. I was recording so many hit songs my younger brother told me if I focus on the music and take it seriously he is gonna match the energy .From that day forward I have dedicated 1000 percent to my music.
2. What do you think makes you stand out from all the other aspiring and upcoming artists in your genre of music?
I have the ability to write music from all genres. From hip hop ,R&B,Country, Pop, Gospel and Blues and the song will be put together well. I also have a southern deep voice with an accent flo that can ride any beat or melody that is very distinctive. I do not sound like any other female artist past or present.
3. If you could collaborate with ANY artist/band… Who would you choose and why?
I would collaborate with Cardi B, Glorilla ,Remy Ma,Ye ,Lil Wayne . I choose them because of their word play and how they can be raw and uncut and get the point across to their fan base.
4. What do you think is your biggest Advantage and your biggest Disadvantage about being an Indie artist?
The biggest Advantage is that female artists have the rap game in a choke hold at the moment.I am the only female right now from Montgomery,Alabama that is original , consistent and has brought a new sound to the Southern area.
My Disadvantage is where I am from here In Montgomery we don’t have a lot of managers, A@R, influencers ,programs or even show cases where we can get discovered. You either have to already know a lot of people and have your own connection or you will get lost in the sauce. No one here will or has ever put anyone in a position to win or level up.
5. Do you prefer the Independent route or would you rather sign to a major record label, and why?
Both are cool. Independence is definitely more work and it’s a day to day process that can feed your family forever by owning most of your work and music.
Whereas to being signed, if marketing right and business relationships are being built and you are being seen as a brand and not just an artist then it can work out to be a great business opportunity.
6. Out of all the songs you’ve released, what do you think is your Best song and why?Candy Rain (Shemix)
Lately a lot of old school songs are being remixed. I wrote the song and did not think anything about it. No one has ever remixed Candy Rain before and I did an outstanding job with the content of the song. However Candy Rain is the most requested song on 97.9 jamz. Most requested at parties and showcases and my most streamed song through distrokid platform. So the fans choose this one to be one of the biggest songs .
7. Do you miss the era of CD sales OR do you prefer the new wave of music streaming? Explain..
I prefer the new wave of music streaming. There are so many platforms available at the tip of your finger that can be used to help you go mainstream
8. Between creating in the studio OR performing live on stage, which is your most enjoyable one and why? I say both. I love music. I can listen to music every day all day . I can create hot music and entertain. I have been this way all of my life.
9. During your entire journey through the music business, what would you consider your Worst experience?I have not had a bad experience to date. I know a lot about the music business but I do not know everything. I am always eager and hungry to learn more .
10. What would you consider your most successful or proudest moment in your music career, so far ?
To be a female independent artist to come out of nowhere and drop 9 songs in 1yr and 4 of them have been on the local radio station for over a year with other platinum artists.
11. If any, what discourages you the Most about the music industry these days?
I do not have any at this time.
12. What inspires you the Most about the music industry these days?
The work ethic one person has to do on a day to day to stay relevant .
13. If you wasn’t in the music business or industry, what do you think you would be doing with your life instead?
I am a Mac train nurse . I am a cosmetologist. I would still work multiple jobs.
14. In your own opinion, What is the current music scene like in your local area?Montgomery is building a buzz right now and we’re up next .
15. What is your latest release and where fans can find it?
(Say they real) will be on all platforms dropping tomorrow on October 28th 2022.
16. What is on your agenda or what can fans expect to see from you in 2022?
I say I have already opened the door for more hot music in 2023 and I can see myself being world wide in 2023, not just a local artist. I will be bringing more heat and fire and adding some different flavor for the music industry as a whole.
