1.What made you decide to jump into the music industry or music business?

I think it was a mixture of being shy and uncool paired with a ton of literal boredom. The first time I ever went to a show in our local scene (back in Southwest Kansas) I had never felt more alive and involved. Before that, I was 13 or 14 years old, riding my bike all over town with a bulky ass CD player in my coat pocket bumping anything new I could get my hands on while wondering what the mechanics of starting a band and going on a tour entailed. I knew music was important to me then, but it was the first time I stood in front of people and performed that I knew I was a lifer. 

2. What do you think makes you stand out from all the other aspiring and upcoming artists in your genre of music?

Dude, have seen me? If Sully from “Monsters Inc” was a rapper, he’d be me. I am a big man and extremely hard to miss. And then I rap and it’s usually more poetry than aggression. I stick out like a sore thumb. I just write what I write and attempt to keep things as real with the audience as I can. I am a mixture of deep thoughts, bad impressions, morbid jokes and random movie lines with no context. 

3. If you could collaborate with ANY artist/band… Who would you choose and why?

I’ve already had the honor of collaborating with my favorite singer/songwriter ever. The Get Up Kids are my all-time favorite band so getting Matt Pryor to guest on a song was easily one of my favorite moments as a musician. As far as a dream collaboration I still have, I would love to do something with Grieves. It was his album “Irreversible” that started this crazy idea that I could transition from spoken word into hip hop. I had the honor of sharing the stage with him years ago, but a verse from Grieves would basically be the biggest drop in my bucket list. Slug (of Atmosphere), Sadistik, Mac Lethal and E-Turn are some others I would love to do something with. Their songs are all so personal and touching. I love the feeling I get when lyrics hit me the way those artists always seem to. 

4. What do you think is your biggest Advantage and your biggest disadvantage of being an indie artist?

A big advantage is the ability to work at my own pace and without someone breathing over my shoulder. I get incredibly anxious when I am in situations where I feel like I must change my process and deviate from my normal routines in order to make music for ears outside of my niche group of listeners. Being independent means, I can do it the way I want to and in the frame of time I choose. The disadvantage is that I am also self-funded and must get creative in order to press albums, print books or create merchandise. It’s usually a grab bag of feelings being an independent artist. Both good and bad. I think any independent artist will tell you it’s a very love/hate relationship

5. Do you prefer the independent route, or would you rather sign to a major record label, and why?

I am perfectly okay with how things have turned out on the independent route. But I think we all dream of having mainstream success at some point. I think that dream becomes less and less as we get older though. Most of us really start to discover the true meaning of why we chose this as we age. I feel like I began as a teenage kid who just wanted attention and that made me fiend for more. To be on tour. To be supported by my art. To be considered one of the greats. As I got older, those things mattered far, far less. It became about the experiences. It became about using music to advocate for more important things like mental health awareness and suicide prevention. It also became a way to retain my identity and feed my soul when I feel lost in the shuffle. I mean, it has always been an outlet, but now that I am older and wiser, It is more evident to me that having music to turn to is far more important than where it can take me. 

6. Out of all the songs you’ve released, what do you think is your best song and why?

Definitely “Blacklist Kansas”, It’s the song that really gave life to everything else. It’s just a song about how much I love my home state and all the beauty and splendor that a lot of people tend to miss. I recorded a demo version in my laundry room years ago and somehow, that crappy demo caught fire and got passed around and ended up on a Facebook group called “Fuck You, I am from Kansas” which has thousands of followers that shared it like crazy. It’s also one I never get sick of playing live because when people catch that hook, they can’t wait to sing it back. I have played that song almost every show since 2013. Other songs come and go and cycle out of the set list, but 95 percent of the time, that’s what I am closing with so I can go out having a blast with everyone.  

7. Do you miss the era of CD sales OR do you prefer the new wave of music streaming? Explain…

I miss the era of CD’s. I miss street teaming and feeling like I earned it. I miss burning CD’s and counting a slug of 100 CD-Rs and thinking “damn…if I sell all of these, I’ll have $500.” It never ended that way. I usually gave away more than I sold or I really knocked the price down just to get people to buy it. But I feel like more people were committed to listening back then. I came into things in a very genuine era of our local music scene. It was all paper fliers, burnt CD’s, cheaply printed shirts, printing your band’s logo on old work shirts and reselling them for $10. It just feels incredibly special to think about experiencing those things and still being here all these years later to experience the way it is now, it’s kind of an odd comparison. Back then, we hustled hard. We worked together, even when we didn’t always like who we were working with. We did incredible things that we didn’t know were incredible in the moment. This generation will never get to experience that and that’s unfortunate, because this is really all about the experiences, at least in my eyes. 

8. Between creating in the studio OR performing live on stage, which is your most enjoyable one and why?

I would rather play a show over recording any day. Nothing compares to being on stage and in the moment. Though I really do enjoy recording. I just recorded my new album “To the North Star, Reaching…” with Jakob Widows and that was an absolute blast. It made me remember why I enjoy recording so much. 

9. During your entire journey through the music business, what would you consider your Worst experience?

I have had a lot of rough moments to go with the good, but I would say the people who critique, talk shit and have a negative opinion while never creating anything or bringing anything to the table are the part of this I hate the most. It’s amazing how people can question your experiences or feelings, or how they feel you should have followed their way of doing it. Some just try to tear you down. Ironically, most of those people never make anything meaningful, just comments on the internet or little jokes to their little circle of jerkoff friends they are trying to impress. Whatever helps you feel better about yourself, I guess. Hell can truly be other people. 

10. What would you consider your most successful or proudest moment in your music career, so far?

I think for me the proudest moment was realizing how much I have grown up. Music used to be a race to see how much I could accomplish or how far I could get. Now, I just watch my son smile and bounce in his jumper while I work on songs, and it makes me happier than I have ever been doing anything involving music. I am very happy and content with where I have been and where I am going. I feel like that is the definition of success. Money gets spent. Fame comes and goes. But things like feeling well about who you are and passing that on is something to truly take pride in. 

11. If any, what discourages you the most about the music industry these days?

Social media algorithms and the way streaming works. I hate that garbage artists can get more exposure because they have help and backing. It’s harder than ever to get people to care because everyone can so easily record and put their music online like it’s nothing. Back in the day, you didn’t record until you could save up or catch a break. Streaming is effective to get people to listen but where I used to be able to net profit on a CD, I need to have thousands of streams to make $20 or so. It has killed music profitability. Most of the money I make comes from merch or other avenues. Technology has made it so easy to be a musician that no one wants to navigate through the haystack of garbage to find that needle anymore. It’s made things incredibly impersonal and made people lazy when seeking out new music. That’s how a lot of great artists get lost in the shuffle and quit prematurely.

12. What inspires you the Most about the music industry these days?

I am always inspired by how supportive some people are. Though it’s harder to get people interested, I will say I am very fortunate to have the same people always popping up to order stuff or to share my work online. Some places I have toured regularly will always bring out the same dozen people who bring a few people each and each time, the shows get better and better. That is so encouraging. When I go out, people still buy CD’s and anything they can to support and help me on my way. As much as I hate a lot of the new means of promotion, I can use Instagram and social media to keep up with my far away friends. It’s fantastic in that respect. 

13. If you wasn’t in the music business or industry, what do you think you would be doing with your life instead?

I’d be doing the same thing. I have always been a writer, first and foremost. I am in the process of editing a brand-new poetry book and will be working on finally starting a magazine here shortly. I also want to branch back into releasing things for others and helping others learn how to grow and promote their projects. Writing is life and always will be. 

14. In your own opinion, what is the current music scene like in your local area?

I live in a small Arkansas town now, so my music scene is almost non-existent. I do everything outside of this area. My few trips to see music out here have been limited to catching my cousin’s husband Andy Smith, bust out his acoustic guitar at local bars. Not much hip hop out here, but Andy can slay a mean “Alice in Chains” cover like nobody’s business. 

15. What is your latest release and where can fans find it?

My new album “To the North Star, Reaching…” is due out early next year, but you can get a taste of it right now! My new single “Fam Bam Bigelow” just dropped on all streaming platforms and I am extremely proud of everything coming up.

16. What is on your agenda or what can fans expect to see from you in 2021? 

I think 2021 has been all about work and 2022 is going to be the time we get to enjoy the fruits of all this labor. New album, new book, new merch, new goals. Heading out to go on the road for a few shows. All exciting stuff. In the meantime, I will just be here enjoying time with my family. This fatherhood gig is pretty damn good and I am excited for everything on the horizon. With music and beyond. Life can be as giving as it is heavy handed.
