Song Review: “Hasjasjeen” by hendren
Singer hendren has released the song “Hasjasjeen.” Based in Utrecht, The Netherlands, hendren has created a song that is a mixture of three different genres: triphop, shoegaze, and alternative R&B. Additionally, hendren has released a music video in support of “Hasjasjeen.” It is strongly recommended people both listen to the song and watch the music video to enjoy the full experience crafted by hendren.
The music video begins by introducing hendrwn in large red font. This makes it nearly impossible for viewers to not be accustomed to him immediately. Then, viewers will see an extreme closeup of an eye opening; the camera is so close that it is actually tough to make out the species. In fact, the entire music video is full of mysterious imagery, allowing for an awe-inspiring viewing experience. Viewers will oftentimes see fingers, yet get little context as to why they are shown or what they are doing, leaving it up to the viewers to decide. Other imagery includes skeletons, dying flowers, and various animals. This includes domesticated animals, as noted in the scene where a domesticated cat is occupying a mattress. Perhaps just as interesting is the room the cat is in. The room features objects wall-to-wall, including a string instrument. It is implied the instrument belongs to hendren or someone else who may contribute to the song. This scene demonstrates that even though the music video relies a good amount on mysterious imagery, there are still signs of musical instruments.
Additionally, the music video includes scenes of hendren in a dark field. One will never see hendren’s nose, eyes, or the top of his head, as they are all covered by a hat. Viewers do get a glimpse of his mouth, though, which lets out surprisingly much emotion. Viewers will be able to tell how hendren is feeling just by looking at how large his mouth opens. Oftentimes he appears to be conveying pain, pouring his heart out in the song and reflecting it in the music video.
As for as the instrumental goes, “Hasjasjeen” consists mostly of deep bass, drums, and string synths. All three of these combine to make a powerful sound unique to the song. The deep bass sets the tone for the song, as it is the first instrument listeners will hear, while the drums maintain the rhythm. The string synths add to the song by being reminiscent of an orchestra.
