Song Review: “Live It Up” by KingQueen

KingQueen has released the song “Live It Up.” Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the band created a pop rock anthem suitable for the world as it recovers from COVID-19. KingQueen has also released a music video in support of “Live It Up.”

“Live It Up” begins with a funky electric guitar, which is played loudly and at an upbeat tone. Instrumentally, it features a mix of electric guitar, rhythm guitar, drums, and synths. All elements of the track fit in well with one another, creating a cohesive instrumental that supports the vocals. In particular, the electric guitar is given a chance to shine after the second chorus, with KingQueen opting for a soaring electric guitar solo. It elevated the mood of the song, supporting the cheery outlook of the lyrics.

The music video begins with flashing lights in a bedroom. Viewers soon after notice the lead singer of KingQueen seemingly sound asleep in her bed with a sleep mask covering her eyes. The video cuts to a graphic of a sign indicating their tour had been canceled due to a virus, which can only be assumed to be COVID-19. Suddenly, the lead singer sits up and holds a microphone up to her mouth, yet is still wearing her sleep mask. Viewers get the sense she is awake, alert, and ready to party. This is supported by lyrics such as “Hey DJ just turn the music up” in the first verse.

While she sings, animations shows sketches of band members, typically on a bright pink background. They are oftentimes playing their respective instruments; at one point, a sketch of the guitarist is riding a sketch of a guitar like a skateboard. While watching these graphics, viewers will realize nobody in KingQueen actually shows their full face in the music video. This evokes a sense of anonymity, and leaves one focused more on the song itself than what they look like.

The highlight of the song is arguably its chorus: “We came to live it up all night/And there’s no stopping us it’s our right/We came to live it up all night/And there’s no stopping us it’s our right.” It’s a rather simple refrain, and is memorable before one is even finished listening to the song for the first time. This chorus is sure to make “Live It Up” a crowd-pleaser at concerts, with audience members likely singing along to the chorus by the end of the song.

Throughout the music video and especially toward the end, viewers will see graphics indicating the eradication of COVID-19. This is shown through multiple viruses humanized with evil faces. Sketches of people throw things at the viruses, which immediately disappear. At one point, a sketch of a cat hits the virus away as if it’s a ball. At the very end of the music video, the lead singer for KingQueen lays back down in bed and sings herself back to sleep using the chorus of “Live It Up” while the cat sits on the bed next to her.
