Baltimore-based rapper Kay L.A. has released the remix of her song, “Crush on You.” This song is sure to please fans of hip-hop, especially those who enjoy listening to an anthem about overcoming someone in their lives. Kay L.A. has also released a music video for the song, allowing listeners to be introduced to who she is: a talented lyricist and rapper who feels empowered and independent.
The video begins with a black screen and the sound of birds chirping. At this point, listeners have no idea what the song will be about or what the music video will look like. Soon after, listeners will have a clearer picture as the video opens to an outdoor basketball court. Kay L.A. and her friends are first introduced standing in a group, and eventually begin to dance over the introductory synth beat.
One of the best aspects of the remix of “Crush on You” is Kay L.A.’s willingness to not hold back with the lyrics. She gets specific about what the situation of her relationship, or lack thereof, is with a certain man. In the first verse, she raps “He be praising me like Jesus.” This gives listeners a clear picture of her train of thought, realizing the amount of attention this man is giving her. She then goes on to brag about her independence, rapping “He said that he could handle me so he must be a pro.” Later on in the song, she makes clear she will have nothing to do with this man, bluntly stating “Don’t care what you say.” Kay L.A. uses a balance of blunt lyrics and more creative lyrics, such as “If you’re trin’ get my heart/I’m sorry I lost it” and “Got more tricks up my sleeves like a magician.” Throughout the song, listeners get a sense of who Kay L.A. is and how she is feeling, which gives it authenticity.
The synths, which are especially prominent in the beginning, take on a distorted noise, driving listeners’ attention to it. When listening more closely, listeners will also hear softer percussion instruments, such as the maracas. This proves that there are indeed multiple layers to the beat, which is notable for drifting away from more generic hip-hop beats.
Throughout most of the music video, viewers will either find Kay L.A. rapping into the camera by herself, or rapping while dancing with her friends. This allows Kay L.A. to be showcased as both a rapper and as someone who often hangs out with other people. At the end, the video comes full-circle, fading out with everyone standing together on the basketball court while looking up.
