Rock’n’roll might no longer be a mainstream genre, but it is still kept alive and healthy by talented underground artists. Singer-songwriter Rob Lee, known with the stage name “Multiple Dimensions”, has recently released the three-track EP “Wake Up”, which will surely make you agree with me.
Packed with a gangsta, urban-feel grit that encounters the typical raw emotions of grunge, the three tracks deliver a strong, passionate hard rock sensation.
True to the spirit of his main influences, such as Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and other grunge bands from the Nineties, Rob Lee has done an excellent job balancing gritty melodies and distorted guitars over rough vocals and lyrics.
The title track “Wake Up” is a sort of urban tale, as we can grasp from the video that accompanies the single. Skateboard tricks and hot girls are the main ingredients of a well-produced micro-film, able to deliver, in a few frames, the anger and the fun of big city life. An atmosphere that can bring the listener back to the 90s and the early 2000s, when punk-rock bands could still get on the charts and young boys and girls could play Tony Hawk’s videogames on old consoles. A time that has gone, but that still lingers in the work of this remarkable musician.
Multiple Dimensions worked with studio engineer Chris Liepe and some talented session musicians to record “Wake Up” during a series of jam sessions in the recording room. The result is an exciting grunge-influenced hard rock we hadn’t heard in ages, with drum fills and distorted guitars as the main protagonists. A bunch of songs that could work as a bridge between generations.
Rob Lee has also done a great job in terms of branding. For example, we can perceive the very same early Nineties, urban feel in the other videos produced to promote the EP. “Suprise”, for example, features two different videos: the first one portraying a breakdancer and the other one showing some parkour and other extreme sports athletes. The same themes and images are explored in “Losing Control”, a slower hard rock ballad.
This debut EP sounds uniform, with a clear concept and a clear identity beyond each and every track. The single “Wake Up”, in particular, is a good summary of the feel and the mood of the whole work.
