Song Review: “2016” by Tyler Rifley and Ayla Danielle

Tyler Rifley has released the song “2016” in collaboration with Ayla Danielle. Based in Anchorage, Alaska, Tyler Rifley gives listeners a song that is a mix of country and pop. The song was released on May 3, 2021, and takes a look back at the year of 2016. A music video has been released starring both Rifley and Danielle to promote the song.

Perhaps most memorable of “2016” is its lyrics. In particular, the chorus is a highlight. It starts with the lyrics “You were like fire I was gasoline/I never felt like this before,” which paints a picture in the minds of the listeners of what can almost be described as a magical relationship. The chorus continues with “Not just a pretty sight to see,” indicating their love goes deeper than outside appearance. It also includes lyrics such as “I was trippin’ all over/You didn’t care you were there on my shoulder,” indicating support for each other. Finally, the chorus concludes with the lyrics “And the way you smiled at me/Was the best part of 2016.” This allows the chorus to end on a nostalgic note, which is also quite bittersweet. It is not tough to imagine two people in a relationship smiling at one another, and will allow some listeners to think back fondly to previous relationships of their own. Most importantly, both Tyler Rifley and Ayla Danielle have singing voices that fit perfectly with the melody of the song. They both impress listeners with their ability to hit notes, and do a good job of selling the nostalgia evoked by the lyrics. 

As for the music video, it opens with a visual of Tyler Rifley strumming his acoustic guitar outside and quickly changes to feet on small rocks covered in water. Merely ten seconds into the video, viewers will see Rifley and Ayla Daniella playing the part of a couple in a relationship as the way down a path in the woods colored in black and white. Other imagery includes Rifley inside, fine-tuning his guitar. This gives viewers the impression that his guitar is important to him, as it plays an integral part in his music. He also appears to enjoy playing the guitar in front of people, as visuals of him playing it outside appear multiple times. The fact much of the video takes place outside, including some scenes by the water, makes “2016” the perfect song for summer.
