On March 26th, Los Angeles-based singer Mia Grace will releaseher new single, “Wait.” The song is a crossover between pop and R&B, and will be a welcome addition to the playlists of those seeking out new music in those genres.
“Wait” opens with an instrumental. This includes synths, both high pitched and low pitched, which balance each other to create a nice listening experience. These synths are accompanied by electric drum claps, a signature in many pop and hip hop songs that Grace borrows for this R&B song. The instrumental is mid-tempo, allowing listeners to get acclimated to all aspects of the beat before the vocals arrive.
When listeners first hear Mia Grace sing, they will hear a falsetto. In fact, Grace spends the majority of “Wait” singing in falsetto. Immediately, listeners will be impressed by Grace’s vocal abilities, as she has great control over her voice. This leads to flawless delivery, leaving every word enunciated properly while never missing a note. Even with flawless vocals and a catchy beat, it takes adequate production to truly make an all-around good song. Luckily, “Wait” features production that balances the beat with the vocals perfectly, with all elements easily heard and distinguished. Nothing fades into the background, allowing listeners to hear the synths, electronic drum claps, and Grace’s vocals all at the same time.
Lyrically, “Wait” begins with the line “I’m not lonely enough to let anybody in my space/I’m not lonely enough to let anybody in my face.” Here, Mia Grace displays a sense of confidence and independence. Grace is implying that while she may feel like she is in a state of semi-loneliness, she is not at a place where she feels the need to have others constantly around her.
The chorus is both catchy and memorable. In it, Mia Grace sings “If you think you’ll be the one who gets to stay/Imma have to tell you I’m the type to wait,” which gives the song its title. She goes on to sing “If you think you’ll be the one to waste my time/Imma have to stop you at the starting line,” a creative play on words that gives listeners a better picture of her feelings. After, she sings “Wait in line/Wait in line/You can get it in time/Get it in time…If you wait/Boy you must stay at the starting line.” These lyrics reiterate what was stated earlier on in the chorus, and reinforce the overarching theme of the song. The chorus is melodically simple, and while it contains many words, it also maintains a sense of repetition. The chorus is also where listeners will notice her harmonizing with herself the most, allowing them to hear her wide range.
