1. What made you decide to jump into the music industry or music business?
I started taking a class in college called “Rap and Spoken Word” where basically we studied the origin and culture of hip-hop. We would get writing assignments where we’d have to write bars and I would just get so into them and I kept doing it even after the class ended. Eventually I just kept getting better over time and became the artist I am now
2. What do you think makes you stand out from all the other aspiring and upcoming artists in your genre of music?
I’m not just in this for the money. I know a lot of people look at me as just another white rapper who’s trying to capitalize off of hip-hop, but I actually care about the craft. Once I started taking this seriously I became a student of the game. I take my art very seriously unlike a lot of these guys today who you can tell care more about making money than music. But real music always lasts, all that other stuff is just a trend, a fad.
3. If you could collaborate with ANY artist/band… Who would you choose and why?
I’d love to work with Kanye one on one in the studio. Just based off of watching clips on like Twitter and Instagram of him making beats I can tell not only would we make something dope but it’d be a lot of fun too. And I’m sure he’d drop some crazy knowledge on me also.
4. What do you think is your biggest Advantage and your biggest Disadvantage about being an Indie artist?
Biggest advantage is being able to 100% do what you want with your music. I get to pick my release dates, what songs I want on my projects and what direction exactly I want to take all my projects. You have 100% artistic freedom.
The biggest disadvantage is having to rely 100% on yourself. It’s nice not having to deal with difficult people, but when time comes for the budget and how much exactly you’re gonna need for promo and stuff like that. Well I’m not gonna say it wouldn’t help to have some investors behind you.
5. Do you prefer the Independent route or would you rather sign to a major record label, and why?
I like the position I’m in, but sometimes you need to make some sacrifices if you’re trying to get to where you want to be. But compromise can also be made and I’m not signing up for anything unless I know exactly what I’m getting into.
6. Out of all the songs you’ve released, what do you think is your Best song and why?
Right now it’s either AYEEE!! Or Presto. Everytime I perform Presto I can see peoples faces change the energy I bring is unlike any other song I’ve made. But AYEEE!! really took off on streaming services when I released it so it’s definitely a toss up between the two.
7. Do you miss the era of CD sales OR do you prefer the new wave of music streaming? Explain…
I liked the era of CDs but I wouldn’t say I miss them. Streaming has made things much more convenient for everyone involved. Consumers like streaming because you get a lot more for a lot less. And for artists, even though one stream isn’t as much as an album sale in terms of royalties, with the amount of platforms there are now, it just gives the listener more of a chance to discover someone.
8. Between creating in the studio OR performing live on stage, which is your most enjoyable one and why?
That’s a tough one because the way I see it, every song you make is always a new journey you go on. And when you get the final product and reach the end of the journey you’re proud of what you came up with. But at the same time, it’s such a rewarding feeling to perform something you’re proud of and get a positive reaction to it from people you’ve never met before. But if I had to choose, I’d go with creating. Creating has always been an escape from reality to me and I know I’ll always be creating even if I’m not performing anymore.
9. During your entire journey through the music business, what would you consider your Worst experience?
My worst experience so far was probably checking in to a venue for a show and finding out I wasn’t actually a scheduled artist for the night. There was some miscommunication during the sign up process and my name had never been put down in the final line up. A lot of my friends and some of my family had come to support me also, I felt really embarrassed. The venue was cool about it and let me get a mini set as the last performer of the night but still I never expected to sign up for a show, only to show up and not be scheduled.
10. What would you consider your most successful or proudest moment in your music career, so far?
My proudest moment so far is definitely getting my record spun on Hot97. Big shoutout to Hip Hop Mike for that he’s one of the coolest guys I’ve met in the industry.
11. If any, what discourages you the Most about music industry these days?
How much people take advantage of aspiring artists. I’ve encountered way too many dudes that are just scamming artists trying to take their money because they don’t know any better. It gives me trust issues honestly. Like when people hit me up on instagram now I can’t tell if they genuinely like me or if they’re just trying to make something off me. I just try to keep my circle small and stay thankful for the ones who actually got my back.
12. What inspires you the Most about the music industry these days?
How so many young kids are getting money and making people mad about it. I’m from a super small town on Long Island and it’s mainly a white neighborhood so it just makes me laugh to see old bitter people complaining about some dudes hair or because he has tattoos on his face. Meanwhile he’s making way more money than you are and not caring at all about what you think of him. It’s just funny to me.
13. If you wasn’t in the music business or industry, what do you think you would be doing with your life instead?
Get some regular ass job and live the regular ass 9-5 life. That doesn’t sound exciting at all but I’m a simple guy. As long as I got my family, my homies and my girl I’ll be alright, everything else is extra.
14. In your own opinion, What is the current music scene like in your local area?
There isn’t a music scene in my area. You find someone every now and then from Long Island that’s a rapper but there really isn’t much. All the opportunities are in the city. Sure there are some venues and some studios but I wouldn’t consider Long Island to have a hip hop scene.
15. What is your latest release and where fans can find it?
ALL NATURAL is my latest project out now on all streaming platforms. Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, Soundcloud, Amazon, Google Play. Literally anywhere that streams music, ALL NATURAL is there.
16. What is on your agenda or what can fans expect to see from you in 2020?
I only put out one six song EP in 2019 and one video so I’m definitely putting out a lot more content this year than last year. ALL NATURAL is just the teaser for what’s to come in 2020 for K’d.
